This booklet is for parents and carers of deaf children. Most of the information children use to learn about the world around them comes from what they see and hear around them. For a deaf child, what they see plays an important role in them gaining language skills and exploring their world. This means that eye care and checking their vision are important throughout your child’s life.
Recent research has shown that approximately two out of 10 children have some problem with their eyesight. For deaf children this number rises to approximately four in 10. This booklet tells you about:
- monitoring the eyesight of a deaf child;
- the types of tests that may be carried out; and
- what you should think about before your child has their eyesight checked.
It was produced jointly by Sense and National Deaf Children's Society.
It accompanies the other booklet for professionals, Quality Standards in Vision Care for Deaf Children and Young People (2004) also published jointly by Sense and NDCS. Click here to know more about the booklet for professionals and download it.
